Carbohydrates: Your Body's Preferred Fuel

Carbohydrates get a complicated reputation, but physiologically they serve a clear purpose: they're your body's fastest and most efficient energy source. When you eat carbs, your digestive system breaks them down into glucose, which your cells use directly for fuel. Your brain, in particular, relies heavily on glucose to function.

Carbohydrates fall into two broad categories. Simple carbohydrates — like those in fruit, milk, or added sugars — are digested quickly and raise blood glucose relatively fast. Complex carbohydrates — found in whole grains, legumes, and vegetables — are digested more slowly, providing a steadier energy release and often delivering fiber along the way.

Dietary fiber, technically a type of carbohydrate, is particularly valuable.
